Germany is located in the Ferrel Cell. Germany is near where the subtropical high-pressure belt collides with the subpolar low-pressure belt. This means Germany often experiences changes in temperature and precipitation.
Because of its location in the mid-latitudes, it receives moderate through out the entire year rather than having a wet season. Some of the highest precipitation can be found in southern Germany because of the Alps. All of this precipitation results in a humid temperate climate.
With the Prevailing Westerlies blowing in from the west with moist maritime air, the climate is very moderate.
Severe Weather
Flooding is one of Germany’s most serious natural hazards. This happens because of heavy rainfall overflowing rivers. One example is the 2021 Western Germany Floods. These floods killed more than 180 people.
Each year, Germany has dozens of tornadoes, which are usually weaker than the ones in the U.S. An example is the 2022 Paderborn Tornado, which injured hundreds of people.
When it comes to Köppen Classification, Germany is a strange case where opinions and charts differ. There are two primary versions: the first is where Germany is split somewhat down the middle between CFB (Temperate Oceanic Climate) and DFB (Warm Continental Climate). The other is where all of Germany is CFB. However, more reputable sources agree that Germany has two climates.
The CFB portion of Germany experiences mild winters, rainfall throughout the year, and is influenced greatly by the Atlantic Ocean.
The DFB half has higher variance in temperature between summer and winter. It has warmer summers, but colder winters. It also experiences precipitation throughout the year.
Most of Germany is covered in a temperate deciduous forest. Some of Germany is grassland. At the highest elevation of the Bavarian Alps, there is also some alpine tundra.
Because Germany is mostly dominated by forest, there was no difference between the people who lived there. Especially in modern day, the Alps bring in a lot of tourism, and it is very profitable for the country. Money will always draw people together.
Native Animals and Plants
Germany has a few useful such as the Elderberry. Its berries and flowers are used to make syrups, teas, and natural remedies. Historically, elderberries were used in folk medicine. Foxglove is also amazing because it contains compounds used to make heart medications. However, it is highly poisonous if eaten improperly. Deadly Nightshade can also be fatal when ingested.
They do not have any major significance. I just think they look cool.
Boar are an important cornerstone of Germany’s hunting and traditions. That being said, it is dangerous and hunters have been killed by wild boar.
The adder is the only venomous snake in Germany. While rarely fatal, a bite does require medical attention.
Germany hosts several internationally recognized bird reserves. The white-tailed eagle can rarely be found by northern lakes.
